City of Newberry Receives Clean Audit for FY 2025, Marking 12 Consecutive Years of Unmodified Opinions

The City of Newberry has again received an unmodified, or “clean,” audit opinion on its Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (found here) for the fiscal year ended September 30, 2025, as issued by the City’s independent auditors, Purvis Gray and Company. An unmodified opinion is the highest level of assurance an independent auditor can provide and means the City’s financial statements were presented fairly, in all material respects, in accordance with governmental accounting standards.

The FY 2025 audit also reported no material weaknesses or significant deficiencies in internal control over financial reporting, no material instances of noncompliance, no reportable items in the management letter, no findings related to the City’s major state projects, and compliance, in all material respects, with grant requirements.

The financial statements show that Newberry maintains a strong financial position, with a positive net position, available reserves, and ongoing investment in long-term assets and infrastructure. The City continues to prepare for major projects through long-term planning, bond financing, grants, and other funding strategies.

Mayor Tim Marden said, “This audit result reinforces that Newberry is well managed and planning carefully for the future. As the City continues investing in infrastructure and other major priorities, residents can be confident that those decisions are being supported by sound financial management.”

City Manager Jordan Marlowe added, “This clean audit reflects the City of Newberry’s sound financial practices and the disciplined work happening behind the scenes in City Hall every day. Results like this take year-round focus, strong internal controls, and a team that takes pride in getting the details right. I am proud of the entire City for this achievement, and especially proud of our Finance team for the professionalism, technical expertise, and attention to detail they bring to their work every day.”
